Barley news Australia: The first load of barley delivered to ABB Grain

South Australia’s 2006/2007 harvest has officially started with the first load of barley delivered on October 5th to ABB Grain’s Port Pirie receival site, the company posted the same day.

Telowie grower Ian Mudge once again took the honours of delivering the first load, delivering 28 tonnes of Feed 1 barley to the silo this morning. Mr Mudge also delivered the first tonnes of the season in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

Port Pirie’s receival site also accepted its first delivery of 24 tonnes of wheat today and is expecting another load of barley to be delivered tomorrow morning.

ABB’s operations manager, storage and handling, Peter Weaver, said the first delivery had been received much earlier than usual; last season’s opening tonnages were received on 27 October.

“Poor growing conditions have resulted in a much earlier start to the season than most years,” Mr Weaver said.

“I think we’ll see other sites in the northern area starting to receive deliveries quite soon, especially if the warm weather continues. “Growers will begin to deliver to other sites around the state in a few weeks time, when the harvest really kicks off.”
